The Cons of a Premium Medical Aid Plan

When it comes to your health you need to plan ahead and make the right investment in the right medical aid plan for your needs. But this does not have to mean that you should spend a fortune on it. Most people think that investing in an entry level medical aid plan will not have the same benefits as investing in a premium plan, but this all depends on your health and what your medical needs are.
Thus if you are someone that does not get sick very often you will most likely benefit more from an entry level plan than you would benefit from a premium plan. But you also need to keep in mind that nobody knows what the future might hold, and anything can happen.
Thus you need to keep in mind that with an entry level plan you will most likely have to pay for the day to day medical needs and you will still be covered for the big medical needs and treatments. But on the other hand a premium medical aid plan will offer you comprehensive cover for day to day and big issue medical treatments, but this cover does come with a big price.
Here is a look at the cons of investing in a premium medical aid plan, as opposed to investing in a basic entry level plan.
Pay for Something that You Will Not Need
With a premium medical aid plan you might end up paying for something that you will never need. If you think about it how many times in your life will you have to be hospitalised you will realise that investing in a premium plan will not be worth the money you pay each month.
Some medical aid plans can cost you more than a thousand each month, and if you put that money that you would have spent on a plan in a savings account each month you will be able to cover your own medical needs. Thus you need to carefully plan ahead and think about what your needs are, because maybe you would be better off saving your medical aid money and then just investing in a simple basic medical aid plan or even just a basic hospital plan. This way you will still be covered and you will be able to save up some money for something that you really need.
You Will Still Need to Pay in
Even if you invest in a premium medical aid plan you will still have to pay in from time to time. This means that you will have to spend extra money on top of what you are already paying each month for your medical cover. Another thing to also keep in mind is that not all medical treatments and diseases are covered and this means that you will still have to pay for it in the end.

The Benefits of an Entry Level Medical Aid Plan

Planning for your health is crucial, and if you do not invest in a medical aid plan you might end up in deep financial difficulties due to increasing medical costs. Because nobody knows what the future might hold, it is crucial that you plan for every type of eventuality.
But a lot of people still believe that proper medical care is out of their reach and that it is only the rich who can afford it. But this cannot be further from the truth as there are very reasonable rates out there for entry level medical aid plans.
This means that you will pay a low monthly premium and that you and your loved ones will be covered in case of an emergency. Here is a look at why you should invest in an entry level medical aid plan to protect your future health.
Low Monthly Payments
With an entry level medical aid plan you will have very low monthly payments, and thus you will end up saving a lot of money when compared to having a bigger medical aid plan. Thus if you are looking to protect yourself and your loved ones, but you are on a budget, there is no better option than to invest in an entry level medical aid plan.
Obviously you will not have the same type of cover as you would have with bigger plans, but at least you will know that if something serious should happen you will be covered and taken care of.
Comprehensive Cover for Most Illnesses
An entry level medical aid plan will also give you cover for most serious illness and treatments. This means that in the end you will still be covered if something serious should happen to you or your loved ones.
Most of the time these plans provide less cover for day to day expenses like doctor and dentist visits and prescription medicine, and will offer you more cover when it comes to serious illnesses that can end up costing a lot of money.
This way you will be able to rest assured that you and your family will be covered in case of serious illness. Thus there is no reason not to invest in your future health today.
Only Pay for What You Need
Entry level medical aid plans can keep their costs low because you will most likely have to pay for most of the day to day medical needs, whilst they will end up covering you in case of serious illness and disease.
This will most likely include cover for dread diseases like cancer, tumours and serious medical emergencies. Thus there is no need not to protect your family and loved ones today by investing in an entry level medical aid plan for them. If you are serious about your health there is no better investment that you could ever make.

New Medical Device and Product Marketing Approvals

Every month, thousands of new medical devices are submitted for marketing approval from the FDA. Many of these devices are turned down or re-classified, but hundreds of them end up getting approved for marketing nationwide. There are several types of approvals companies can seek from the FDA, which are PMA, 510(k), and HDE. We will review each type of approval in this article and provide a few examples of the devices approved this month. Manufacturers and supply companies must also get their items re-approved each time a change is made, such as different electronic boards, lubricants, or even when software is changed. These "re-approvals" seem to make up the majority of the applications for approval, but there are still many new devices and companies who are striving to improve medical devices and equipment world wide.
Pre Market Approvals (PMA) are for devices that require more complete testing for functionality and safety, because they are new to the market or are high risk devices. A few recent devices that have been approved under this category are a Harmony HiResolution Bionic Ear System, which was a model change that needed to be approved, not a brand new product, as well as a Open Pivot Heart Valve. The heart valve manufacturing location was approved by the FDA.
The next category is the 510(k) category, which is for medical devices that are similar to other medical devices that are already legally marketed for the exact same use. When a device is being marketed for a different use, it would most likely need a PMA or HDE approval instead. Some examples of recently approved medical devices that fall under this category are the 101 Total Hip and The G60 Diagnostic Ultrasound System. Both of these items were medical devices that fell under this category, because they were substantially equivalent to existing devices being used for the same thing.
The third category is Humanitarian Device Exemptions (HDE). These are devices that are considered less of a risk, because they are not used with the mainstream public. To qualify for HDE approval, it must be a medical device or diagnostic tool used on a condition or disease that affects less than 4000 people within the USA each year. Companies who market these types of devices are generally planning on taking a loss when bringing these products to market. When a product is only designed to work with less than 4000 people each year, the costs and expenses of getting this product to marked will generally outweigh the profits a company will make.

Contaminated Surgical Instruments

Every day, all across the United States of America, thousands of surgical procedures are performed in medical facilities. These procedures are conducted for a number of reasons ranging the gamut from cosmetic and elective purposes, to life saving and emergency purposes. Regardless of the reason behind the surgical procedure, all surgeries carry risk, while of course some more than others, and patients place a great deal of faith and trust in their medical professionals. Even though risk is understood, patients expect that their procedures are still going to go well, and that they will suffer no consequences or side effects.
While this is true for the most part, unfortunately, there are times when mistakes are made and complications arise. One of the top causes of injuries to patients during surgery is infection. This surgical complication accounts for the most injuries and deaths amongst patients in the United States, which has led to a great cause for concern over how well surgical instruments are being sterilized in healthcare facilities, as well as the techniques used to sterilize the equipment.
With over thirty million surgical procedures completed each and every year, there is a great chance of infection. In fact, statistics suggest that at least twenty percent of all procedures will lead to infections that could be prevented, simply because of using instruments that were contaminated. If this was not bad enough in and of itself, the side effects that can come from the infections can cause severe complications that can be life threatening and lead to the need to be hospitalized for long periods of time, which results in astronomical medical bills.
If you or someone you know has been harmed because of a surgical injury that resulted from contaminated instruments, it is important to understand that you have legal rights. These types of injuries are because of wrong doing and/or negligence you are entitled to file a claim to help recoup damages for pain and suffering as well as expenses. You should not delay in seeking the assistance and guidance of a personal injury attorney who specializes in the area of medical malpractice. These professionals are quite skilled in this area of the law and are your best line of defense.
Surgical instruments, tools, and equipment provide doctors, surgeons, and even dentists with a great deal of assistance when conducting procedures. These implements allow medical professionals to reach areas that may not otherwise be reached, and are designed to help make procedures safer, and more effective. While safeguards are put into place to protect patients by making use of sterilization and other cleaning methods, there are times when this does not take place, or it is not done properly. Since there are a number of diseases that are considered to be communicable, failing to take adequate precautions can be a very serious issue that can have devastating complications for patients.
There is no doubt that inadequate sterilization causes instruments to become contaminated, which leads directly to patient health being placed in danger. Contaminated surgical instruments quickly spread a number of viruses and bacteria. Common illnesses that result from contamination include: HIV and AIDS, Hepatitis A, B, and C, Tuberculosis, Gastrointestinal infections, pneumonia, Crutzfeldt Jakob Disease, as well as other serious conditions.
The medical complications from these diseases can be devastating, and in a number of cases fatal. Patients are left with their lives destroyed and are forced to face a new reality that will include years of medical treatments, medication, possibly future surgeries, and painful procedures. In some cases, the disease will never leave and the patient will have a shortened lifespan. On top of these serious health issues, the cost for treating the illnesses that result from contaminated instruments can be extremely high.
The law requires that medical professionals follow strict guidelines for thorough decontamination of all instruments and equipment being used in procedures. These guidelines are put in place to protect the safety and the health of all patients. When these guidelines are not followed correctly, a type of negligence has occurred and those who are responsible for the damages can be and should be held accountable for their actions.
If you or someone you know has suffered an infection or contracted a disease because of instruments that were not properly sterilized, it is important to understand that you have rights and you can seek compensation for your injuries. A lawsuit can be filed and compensation can be sought for a number of different issues including past, present, and future medical bills, a loss of income, a loss of quality of life, pain and suffering, as well as punitive damages in some cases. Punitive damages are a type of compensation that is awarded as nothing more than a form of punishment. This type of punishment is handed down as a way to hopefully prevent future similar acts from occurring again.
You should not delay in seeking the assistance of a personal injury attorney who specializes in the area of medical malpractice and negligence. These professionals are highly skilled in this area of the law and will work hard on your behalf to get you the justice you so rightly deserve. Medical professionals and hospitals have teams of attorneys working to protect their interests, and you should have someone fighting for your rights in your corner.
These types of cases can be quite complicated and often hinge on many small details. Therefore, you should not attempt to file on your own without the help of a legal professional. You will need to ensure all details are complete, and that all statutes of limitations have been met. Since most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency basis, you do not have to worry about funding your claim in advance or as it progresses through the court system. You pay nothing until the time your case settles. This can provide you with a great deal of comfort during an already difficult time, and you will find you have nothing to lose, but a great deal to gain.

6 Reasons Why Hospital Employees Require Compliance and Ethics Training

As it goes, good ethics and compliance to regulations and procedures is essential in all organizations, and more so in hospitals and health care organizations, as they deal directly with human lives. When someone's life is on the line, even one small mistake can cost you everything. Therefore, it is very important that all hospital employees are given good ethical practices and compliance training.
Here are six major reasons why hospital employees need to be trained.
• This training teaches employees to differentiate between right and wrong in the health care setting. Though it is not necessary that all compliance negligence and bad ethics leads to violations, it is good for the employees to be aware of which of theiractions are damaging to a patient's health and which are not.
• When healthcare professionals strive to practice good ethical behavior and comply with the rules, the chances of fraud decreases considerably. Fraud is not only against the law, but also creates issues for those who are dependent on healthcare resources for their treatment. This in turn is a disadvantage for the hospital, as it leads to waste of financial resources that could have been used for new equipments and other needful things.
• Since HIPAA has emphasized on compliance and ethics training, the patients have benefitted greatly. They now have the upper hand in all things pertaining to their own health information. The doctors are called to respect the patient's wishes and rights. All the patients have the same right to the best health care, privacy and confidentiality, and independence.
• When all the employees of the hospital consciously follow all the compliance regulations and ethical standards, the hospital functions smoothly and efficiently. This is beneficial for both patients and well as doctors. There will be no hitch in the work flow and better services will be provided faster.
• This training imbibes in the employees a desire to uphold a high standard in the work place. They will strive to do the best job and also understand their own limitations. When each employee does the job he/she is assigned to do, the standard of the hospital reaches new heights.
• When the employees of an organization follow good ethical practices and adhere to the regulations, the hospital benefits and the people around notice. Thus, it gives the hospital a good standing, which is very important for the hospital to get more patients and maintain a good reputation.
If hospital employees properly undergo this training, the medical system would be more efficient in providing services and helping patients. This requires the hospital management to be committed to this training. They will have to spare their employees for the training and then encourage them to adhere to the guidelines. This can be done through checklists and rewards, to name a few. It is not only undergoing the training but also putting it all into practice in the hospital setting that makes a difference. Overall, good ethics and compliance benefits the patients, doctors, and the hospital itself.

Few Things You Should Know About CPR Training: 5 Points

Research has shown time and again that immediate CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) given to victims of cardiac arrest double their chances of survival. If one of your loved ones or even a stranger had a heart attack in your presence, would you be able to help them? Since most people don't bother with CPR training the answer would most likely be no. Research has also shown that a larger percentage of cardiac arrests occur at home, which is all the more reason for you to learn CPR.
Here are few things about CPR training you should know.
• Cardiac arrest means that the person's brain, heart, and lungs are not getting blood and oxygen. CPR includes chest compressions as well as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, which when given to the victim can bring a significant change in his condition. It can add a few precious moments to the victim's life until professional medical help arrives. In most cases, CPR is not given immediately and it leads to the death of the patient by the time he is taken to the hospital for treatment.
• Knowing CPR is also beneficial for other emergency medical situations such as choking, burns, drowning, electric shock, and drug overdose. For e.g. the Heimlich Maneuver is taught in a CPR training class which will enable you to help a victim who may be choking due to an obstructed airway.
• CPR is only useful if it is administered immediately. It greatly increases the victim's survival chances. Sometimes even trained individuals hesitate to perform CPR for fear of worsening the situation. It is important to remember that without CPR the victim will probably die. Therefore, any CPR is better than no CPR. It is essential to choose a reputable training program that will give you the confidence to administer the technique as soon as the medical emergency occurs.
• Nowadays, many medical organizations and government offices have made CPR training compulsory for their employees. Employees of a hospital are more likely to be present for emergencies and therefore are required to be always prepared. Other individuals like geriatric care-givers and baby-sitters must also be trained as they may experience certain emergencies while performing their jobs.
• There is always a fear in the mind that providing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to others, especially strangers increases the risk of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. Therefore, it is necessary to wear a mask while performing CPR. Masks with special sanitary barriers for safety and cleanliness are also available. They incorporate a one-way valve and can be carried around easily. It is recommended that you carry your own mask in your bag at all times as you never know when you may encounter a cardiac arrest victim.
CPR Training, though not always mandatory, is often useful as it enables you to save someone's life. Accidents and emergencies occur without prior notice. Knowledge of this particular first-aid technique keeps you prepared at all times and gives you the confidence to save a life.

Staying Healthy: 8 Critical Points About Bloodborne Pathogen Training

In the United States, training in the matters of bloodborne pathogens and universal precautions falls under the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Any type of bloodborne pathogen training program, whether it is meant for medical professionals, students, or other employees, needs to follow OSHA's guidelines. Read below to find out what you should expect from a certified bloodborne pathogen training course.
• In order to determine the risk for exposure in certain workplaces, employers have to compile a list of job qualifications where all employees are at risk for occupational exposure, a list of job qualifications where at least some of the employees are at risk for occupational exposure, and a list of procedures and tasks during which occupational exposure could occur.
• To reduce the risk of occupational exposure, employers have to make sure they use engineering and work practice controls. If after the implementation of these controls, there still is a risk of occupational exposure, employers have to provide staff members with protective equipment (gloves, masks) and hand washing stations or antiseptic hand cleansers. The cost of the protective equipment, as well as its maintenance (cleaning, disinfection, or disposal) is completely up to the employer. Clinical laboratories should be equipped with eye washing facilities as well.
• Immediately after their use, any contaminated sharps (needles, scalpels, or scissors) have to be placed in labeled or specifically colored containers. These containers have to be leak proof and puncture resistant and they must remain closed at all times during their transportation.
• Employees are forbidden from eating, smoking, drinking, handling contact lenses, or applying cosmetics in any areas of the workplace where occupational exposure is likely. It is also forbidden to store food or drinks in these areas.
• All regulated waste, thought of or known to be infected with a bloodborne pathogen, has to be either incinerated or decontaminated through any method that can effectively destroy or inactivate bloodborne pathogens.
• All areas with potentially infected material have to have warning sign posted on every access door. The warning sign should contain the international symbol for biohazard as well as a description of the infectious agent and possible recommendation for those who access the areas. Also, only authorized personnel that has been thoroughly trained and made aware of the risks should be permitted to access such areas.
• Any employee working with potentially infected materials should be vaccinated against Hepatitis B and other bloodborne pathogens after receiving proper training and before they start work. Also, the employer is required to offer employees free medical evaluations from time to time.
• Employees should receive adequate bloodborne pathogen training before they start performing tasks where there is a likeliness of occupational exposure and should retake the course once a year from that point on.
These are some of the most important guidelines offered by OSHA in regards to bloodborne pathogen training. You can find out more about these precautions as well as other procedures that need to be followed in any nationally-recognized bloodborne pathogen training course.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training For Non-Medhcal Professionals: 4 Points to Keep In Mind

Disease causing microorganisms that are transmitted from one person to another through contaminated human blood are known as bloodborne pathogens. The most common bloodborne pathogens are hepatitis B and C and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). Having no medical background, you may not understand the dangers of exposure to these pathogens. Contamination may lead to disease and in sometimes even death.
Therefore, it is good always be prepared if you are ever in a situation that causes you to be exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Here are four simple guidelines to follow in such situations. These guidelines are approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
• First of all you need to protect yourself from any potentially infected blood and body fluids. If you happen to encounter someone on the road have a cardiac arrest and decide to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), you must wear gloves and a mask. If you don't have access to either, weigh out your options and make your decision. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.
• Second, if you ever are exposed to someone's blood or body fluids, waste no time. You need to act fast. You never know whose blood is infected and whose is not. Wash that area with hot water with soap. Let it lather up for a few minutes before you wash it off. If your eyes have been infected, use clean water to flush your eyes. Do this for five minutes at least.
• The third guideline pertains to the room or equipment that is contaminated. For e.g. if someone has bled over a work top, clean the area immediately. You can use one part Clorox solution and eight parts water. Scrub the place down let the solution rest for a few minutes, and then wash it off. In case of needles or sharp instruments, wdar gloves while picking them up and put them all in a bag along with the dirty cleaning cloths and dispose of them properly. You must be extra careful when dealing with needles. Be careful not be accidentally poke yourself with as you try to throw it away.
• If the incident has occurred in your workplace you must immediately report it to the head of your department and the Human Resource Department. You must also show yourself to a doctor to confirm whether you have been contaminated or not. Even if you think you were not exposed, you must go to the doctor as a precautionary measure.
Employees of healthcare organizations, especially doctors, nurses, blood bank technicians, laboratory technicians, housekeeping staff, and janitors are at a greater risk of being exposed to bloodborne pathogens owing to their nature of work. Therefore, it becomes especially important to them to take the necessary precautions to keep themselves protected and safe. Being in such a setting, they are aware of the consequences of even a small careless mistake. However, a layman on the street who may be accidentally exposed to such pathogens does not understand the severity of the problem. Hence, it is necessary to spread awareness so everyone knows what to do to protect themselves in an emergency.
